John G. McHugh, President - Chief Investment Officer
As President of Duncan McHugh Investments and the Chief Investment Officer of its asset management division, WealthTrust Asset Management, Mr. McHugh manages investment portfolios on a discretionary basis for clients of Advisors, individuals and organizations who are seeking professional portfolio management services.
John and his team have developed nine investment management strategies, referred to as "sleeves", using a quantitative approach to investing. He manages assets for individuals, foundations, hospitals, pension plans and other institutions. With more than 25 years of experience in helping investors and 18 years in private portfolio management, John utilizes his extensive knowledge in constructing portfolios with asset allocations for all levels of risk tolerance. His management of these portfolios, and in particular his selection of equities for these portfolios have offered his investors a disciplined approach to investing with proven results.
Mr. McHugh’s background includes a B.S. in business from the University of Missouri in Columbia with an emphasis in accounting and finance. Upon graduation in 1973, Mr. McHugh accepted a job with Monsanto Company in St. Louis and eventually rose to his final position of Director of Financial Reporting. During this employment period with Monsanto, Mr. McHugh passed all four parts of the CPA exam on the initial sitting, though he is not currently a practicing CPA. He remained with Monsanto Company until 1988, when he accepted the position of financial advisor with Merrill Lynch’s Private Client Group.
In 1994, John joined Oppenheimer, Inc. in St. Louis, and attended DePaul University’s School of Commerce completing the portfolio management course study program. Mr. McHugh’s management of client portfolios on a discretionary basis began at Oppenheimer, Inc. through their Omega Portfolio Management Program. In 2000, he moved his financial advisory practice to Prudential Securities, a predecessor firm of Wells Fargo Advisors.
Upon leaving Wells Fargo Advisors, John transitioned his investment management practice to his own Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) company, WealthPoint Investments LLC, doing business as Duncan McHugh Investments and WealthTrust Asset Management.
Darlene S. Duncan, Vice President – Investment Officer
Darlene is an investment industry veteran with over 30 years of experience. She joins John McHugh as a partner of Duncan McHugh Investments, assisting in portfolio management with a concentration in fixed income securities. In addition, she heads up the company’s portfolio trading, marketing, and acts as Chief Compliance Officer.
A Kentucky native, Darlene attended the University of Kentucky and started her career with J.J.B. Hilliard, W.L. Lyons, Inc. in Louisville, Kentucky in the mid 1970’s. With Hilliard-Lyons she gained experience as a computer software programmer for the technical analysis of individual equities and she marketed the process to bank Trust Departments throughout Kentucky. Ms. Duncan later became a trader in the firm’s Municipal Bond Department gaining experience and insight into the fixed income markets. Registered as a Financial Consultant in 1981, Darlene worked in the Lexington, Kentucky branch office with both individual and institutional clients.
Her family’s move to San Antonio, Texas and Winchester, Virginia brought Darlene to work with regional brokerage firms that later were acquired by national firms. While her children were young, Darlene served in a support capacity, which enabled her to spend valuable family time and she transitioned back into an advisory role once her family commitments allowed.
After more than 20 years in Winchester, Virginia, most of which with Wells Fargo Advisors, Darlene moved to the Destin, Florida and began working with John McHugh and his DBS portfolios in 2013.
Darlene and John left Wells Fargo Advisors to form their own Registered Investment Advisory firm, WealthPoint Investments LLC, also doing business as Duncan McHugh Investments and WealthTrust Asset Management.
